Urban Acreage House

UPDATE (Jan 2016): This was our home in Omaha, Nebraska. We spent six years lovingly painting, repairing and updating this house, and we loved it. So much! We were getting pretty close to “finished” and had no plans to move, when we suddenly found ourselves living in Kansas last fall. Now we are adjusting to life three hours south (it’s warmer here, I swear!) and updating a 1945 Colonial. Thanks for visiting my blog, I hope you’ll follow along in our home improvement adventures!

We purchased our home in the summer of 2009 and started a major effort to revamp it in the fall of 2012. The house is nothing exciting in terms of architecture; just your standard 1950’s ranch with an unfinished basement, garage and backyard. Although it is rather small and Plain Jane, I love our place and I am so grateful to have the opportunity and ability to own a home. In a world of Pinterest, blogs and glossy magazines, I think it is important to remember there are folks who would gladly take any home so long as they could call it their own. Spacious, perfectly styled homes are the exception, not the rule. Remember that.

So, as I was saying, we started updating our home last year. We are on a tight budget (like the majority of people) and are doing most of the work ourselves. I love vintage furniture, thrift store finds and DIY projects and Jesse can build anything,so it’s working out well. We still have a long way to go, but here is where we are at – lots of rooms in various stages of completion.

Our most recently completed room is the living room area of the dining / living room. As I was taking photos, it hit me that the only new-new furniture pieces are the sofa and area rug. The rest is upcycled, thrifted, vintage, etc. Just the way we like it! More photos and information in this post.

I painted the kitchen cabinets and backsplash in February of 2014. The swiss style crosses on the chalkboard backsplash are my favorite part! There are before pictures and more information about the makeover here and here

The office looks a little different from this today, but I’m still not thrilled about it. I think having two doors in the room makes the layout difficult. I’ll figure it out, eventually!

I’m right in the middle of re-doing B’s room. Here’s what it looked like before – not terrible or anything, but the blue walls and polka dots were just a bit too much for us.
Our bathroom is teeny tiny, but I love it. Unfortunately, the space is getting mildewy because we need to install a bigger fan, so the walls will be painted again in the near future. More photos and info about the bathroom in this post.

Our house is modestly sized, but our yard and deck are ginormous! Jesse re-built the deck during the summer of 2014 and it was one of my first blog posts.
